I
used to deliver flowers. I grew up in a flower shop. “Good
afternoon, Sunshine and Flowers!” I still
get tempted to answer the phone like that- old habits die hard.
My mother, Sharon, taught me the principles of flower design.
As a fine artist I’ve seen those principles translate in
all of the arts. “Always leave room for the butterflies
to fly through,” she said. Also, “know when to stop,” “don’t
overwork it.” And, “it should look like they just
grew out of the vase that way, like you just watched. Sometimes
that’s what it feels like.” One of mom’s favorite
quotes comes from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
by Mary Baker Eddy. This book was a major source of inspiration. “The
floral apostles are hieroglyphs of deity.. Suns and planets
teach grand lessons.” The lessons I learned doing flowers
with my mom go a lot farther than the principles of design. It
was
always about love. |

| Just
when life seems completely compartmentalized, we might find
the
joy in a bridge across the compartments. That’s
what happened when I started making faeries. My work in the flower
shop and character building with puppets, and fine arts, combined
in these display pieces. I still get calls from clients who want
something dramatic and whimsical for their home or office. |
